Medical Waste

Approximately two million tons of biohazard medical waste is produced per year in the United States. Medical waste is generated by medical research and by the medical treatment of human beings and animals.

Common medical wastes include soiled bandages, culture dishes, surgical gloves and instruments (including needles) as well as human tissue.

Hospitals which contract for their waste to be hauled off-site for treatment usually do so because it is a way of not having to deal with the regulatory procedures in treating it themselves. However, medical facilities consistently run into several problems with off-site treatment and disposal:

Process up to 2,000 pounds per hour!
1) Disposal rates are expensive and unpredictable.
2) Untreated medical waste must be stored prior to disposal, creating a potential health risk.
3) Hospitals are liable for their medical waste until it is destroyed, even after being collected for disposal. (Cradle-to-grave)

The Solution
